The Role of a Māori Ward Councillor: Committed to Our Whānau, Hapū, and Iwi

Updated: Aug 18

As a Māori Ward Councillor, my dedication goes beyond representing individual voters—my commitment is to serve and be accountable to our whānau, hapū, and iwi.

I believe in amplifying Māori voices, not speaking for them. My role is to ensure that Māori communities have the space and support to speak for themselves within council processes.

Supporting rangatiratanga—Māori sovereignty—is central to this mahi. I am here to protect and enable mana motuhake—the right of Māori to self-determination—and to ensure tikanga Māori is respected and integrated into all council decisions.

I am committed to breaking down barriers that hinder Māori participation in democracy, creating a more inclusive and equitable local government. Upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi is fundamental to this role, guiding us to honour our commitments and partnership.

My goal is to foster an environment where mauri Māori can thrive within council decision-making, strengthening connections between council and our marae, and ensuring that no one is left behind. As we say, kia kaua tētahi tangata e whakarerea—no one should be left behind.

Together, we can build a future that respects, values, and elevates Māori perspectives and aspirations.
